City of Round Rock to move forward with expansion of public works facilities

The City of Round Rock continues its comprehensive plan to expand the City’s Bob Bennett building located at 3400 Sunrise Road, which serves as a centralized campus for Public Works divisions and is expected to grow to include the Community and Neighborhood Services and General Services Departments.

Phase 1 of the building was completed in 2019, consolidating administrative and operational functions for the Public Works Department, which includes the Utilities and Environmental Services and Transportation divisions. The building was renamed from the Luther Peterson building in honor of former City Manager BobBennett in 2020. Round Rock City Council approved a contract with Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. in May 2024 for design and construction administration work related to additional phases of the building complex.

The master plan for the complex was designed to accommodate the city’s growth and was recently updated by Jacobs to extend beyond the building’s initial 2035 long-term goals. The upcoming Phases 2, 3 and 4 will be implemented over the next five years, ensuring that all necessary departments are adequately housed and supported within the complex.

Phase 2: Public Works

Key elements of Phase 2, which will be located on the eastern portion of the complex, include:

  • Expansion of the main building to support Transportation field staff and related operations.
  • Some expansion for Utilities and Environmental Services staff.
  • New buildings designed to centralize operations for Community and Neighborhood Services, which is currently operating out of Round Rock City Hall.

Design and construction for Phase 2 is slated to begin in September 2024 and continue through June 2026.

Phase 3: General Services Fleet Maintenance

Notable features of Phase 3, which will develop the west portion of the complex, include:

  • The new facility for General Services Fleet Maintenance will house advanced equipment to ensure the proper maintenance and servicing of all city vehicles, from light-duty vehicles to larger utility trucks.
  • Includes space for fleet maintenance operations to grow in line with the City’s expanding vehicle needs.

Design and construction for Phase 3 is expected to start in April 2025 and conclude by July 2028.

Phase 4: General Services Facility Maintenance, Building Construction, and Administration

  • A dedicated space for facility maintenance and building construction management to ensure that all city infrastructure is well-maintained and updated as necessary.
  • Administrative offices that will centralize management functions for the General Services Department.

Design and construction for Phase 4 is scheduled to begin in February 2026 and continue through August 2029.
