Library, SCORE to offer more small business workshops

Join us for Biz.ability Small Business Workshops starting September 20th, 2024.

Are you a small business owner looking to gain a competitive edge? Would you like to take your idea or hobby to the next level? Join the Round Rock Public Library and SCORE Austin for its in-person Fall Biz.ability series of workshops.

The Fall series of Biz.ability features an array of workshops from HR to marketing, including a workshop by a lawyer. Not only will you learn from these experts; you will save money (we all know how expensive lawyers, HR and Marketing Consultants are).

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. SCORE’s Austin chapter has been serving the community for nearly 60 years.

Interested participants must register for each individual session by clicking the links below.  No library card required to attend.

September 20: Biz.ability: Basics of Small Business Lending

Learn how to manage cash flow and credit for your business. In this presentation, Ryan Melendez will define three types of cash flow and discuss solutions and potential loans to meet your credit needs. Not all lenders provide the same services. You will want to narrow your search to those that offer the type of financing you are looking for and will be likely to approve your loan application based upon you and your business creditworthiness. Ryan will discuss the factors that determine creditworthiness.

About the presenter

Ryan Melendez serves as the Assistant Vice President, and Market Leader for BB&T at the Crestview Banking Centers. His career has included experience in Small Business lending at the branch and district level for IBC Bank. He has 15 years of experience in retail banking and small business lending, where he has successfully assisted his clients in achieving their financial goals, and business ownership.


September 27: Revolutionize Your Productivity Using AI Tools to Streamline Your Content Workflow

Learn to use tools such as ChatGPT and other AI tools to help revolutionize your social media content and workflow. Save time and energy by automating and streamlining content creation. Gain insights and spark creativity to craft compelling content worthy of engagement and action.

About the presenter

Carolyn Cummins is a small business owner with a passion in helping other solopreneurs and small business owners fine-tune their marketing strategies to showcase their expertise while being authentic and building a connection to their audience. She has over 25 years of sales and marketing experience; small scale as an entrepreneur and large scale managing large corporate sales divisions. She has been cultivating business social media content for over 10 years for businesses of all scales and in a variety of industries from fitness, restaurants, professional services, and real estate.


October 4: Create Your One-Page Business Plan

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of writing a lengthy business plan? Don’t worry, this workshop will guide you through creating a powerful one-page plan in real-time, focusing on the key elements that matter most. You’ll craft your mission statement, how your business will be structured, and other essentials that matter most to lenders. You’ll leave feeling motivated and equipped to turn your business idea into reality.

About the presenter

Shannon Black is an entrepreneur and former math teacher who started a Montessori preschool business when she couldn’t find a good one for her 1-year-old son. She expanded her initial four-classroom school into two locations with over 50 employees and has broken ground on her third location in Jarrell. Shannon also donates her time as a mentor, speaker, and Chair for SCORE Austin, promoting their free business mentoring and workshops.


October 11: Biz.ability: Keeping Your Business Legal

On Friday, October 11, from 12:30PM-2:00PM, in Meeting Room A+B at the Round Rock Public Library, learn the legal issues of forming a business including picking the right entity, trademark issues, contracts, ethics, and how to hire a professional. Every new business needs advice from an attorney to avoid legal problems while operating. When you set up your business, make careful choices. Business lawyer Darin Siefkes designed this workshop to be interactive to allow you to ask questions to better understand these and other legal concepts:
•    Why do we form an entity?
•    What are the types of entities?
•    Where to form your entity?
•    Why is entity liability protection is no substitute for proper insurance?
•    What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different forms of business organization?

Darin also will offer invaluable tips for dealing with an attorney.

Darin Siefkes has represented many small and large businesses. Darin’s legal experiences (besides vehicle warranty issues) include employment, intellectual property issues, corporate formations, transnational matters of all kinds, and civil litigation. Before law school, Darin worked in a variety of industries. He has run and managed groups in the oil field, media, software, and technology industries. Additionally, he has worked for large and small IT corporations.


October 18: Using Facebook and Instagram Ads for Your Business

Digital Marketing continues to power many business ad budgets, and Facebook/Instagram ads play an important role in many marketing budgets. This workshop will cover:

The Facebook / Instagram ecosystem
•    Selecting your audiences
•    Building effective ad campaigns and what ads to run
•    Retargeting campaigns (video, website)
•    Reviewing the data

About the presenter

Bill Combes’s diverse background led him to start and run a digital marketing agency in 2014. He started a private weather forecasting company called AnythingWeather and helped found a non-profit, The United Association of Storm Restoration Contractors. He has over 12 years of experience running Facebook ads with over $5 million in total ad spend.  Bill has been a member of the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce board of directors for over 6 years and serves on the CHASCO YMCA board of directors.


October 25: HR101: Employee Hiring and Retention

It is difficult to find good employees. HR professional Cherylann Campbell will share an overview of key concepts necessary to manage the employee life cycle (from to hire to fire).

Participants will leave with an increased awareness of legally protected groups and best practice solutions to address common personnel challenges. Practical solutions include how to: write a helpful job description, create meaningful interview questions, conduct background checks, develop an employee handbook checklist, preparing for the first day of employment. Also covered are typical small business mistakes such as using contractors and interns, misclassifying workers, and managing overtime.

November 1: HR101: Maximizing and Managing Employee Performance

In this workshop for Texas employers, HR professional Cherylann Campbell focuses on how to maximize the performance of your employee workforce while staying compliant with key labor regulations. Learn how to write performance expectations, establish a reward and review system, give constructive feedback, and reduce risk when dealing with poor performance and termination challenges. You will learn practical solutions, HR checklists and hands-on exercises.
