New performing arts venue planned in Round Rock following grant approval

Rock Creek Plaza Shopping Center in Round Rock is expected to house a new performing arts space following the approval of agreements by City Council at the Feb. 22 meeting.

The unanimous decision included a grant agreement with Penfold Theatre Company, setting the stage for a new 6,400 square foot performing arts venue in the shopping center located along IH-35, which has recently attracted an influx of new restaurants and retail. Penfold, which has been a mainstay in the local performing arts scene for the past 16 years and recognized as “Best in Austin” by the Austin Chronicle, will manage and operate the new venue, which is expected to have a seating capacity of 100-150 individuals.

The City’s comprehensive plans, including Round Rock 2030 and Round Rock Creates, call for fostering creative entrepreneurship and enhancing the community’s quality of life through diverse entertainment options.

“These agreements are in line with the City’s objective to nurture creative enterprises and expand entertainment choices for our residents—a mission that Penfold has consistently supported through the years,” said Round Rock Mayor Craig Morgan. “I believe this project is the right fit for Round Rock and I look forward to this new chapter in Penfold’s efforts to enrich our cultural landscape.”

The approved grant, sourced from hotel occupancy tax (HOT) funds paid by visitors to Round Rock, amounts to $326,330, and will cover rent for Penfold’s new venue for 18 months following the organization’s rent commencement date with Danley Properties, which owns Rock Creek Plaza. This period will allow Penfold to transition into its new space and offer a variety of programming, including plays, musicals and workshops, after its planned opening in fall 2024. The new venue will also offer rental space to other arts organizations.

Council also approved a tri-party agreement between the City of Round Rock, Danley Properties and Penfold Theatre Company outlining financial arrangements and responsibilities of each party for the operation of a performing arts space at Suite 290 in Rock Creek Plaza Shopping Center. The agreement outlines that the venue is expected to host performing arts events at least 180 days per year.

Penfold Theatre Company is actively engaging in fundraising efforts to renovate the space ahead of its opening, aiming to create an environment that meets the needs of performers and audiences alike.
